Statue of Ramesses II

Located in the city of Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt is the colossus of Ramesses II. The 10 meter tall statue was first discovered in 1820. It was donated to the British Museum in London, but the offer was declined because of the difficulty of moving the giant statue. It remains where it was first discovered. A museum was built around the statue to protect it.

Alabaster Sphinx

Located near to the statue of Ramesses II is the Alabaster Sphinx. The sphinx is 8 meters long and 4 meters high and is estimated to weigh 80 tons. Carved from a single piece of alabaster, the sphinx is extremely impressive. It is not known who the sphinx represents, but with it headgear, it obviously represents a Pharaoh.
