Chengdu is not located on a seismic belt
According to the head of Chengdu's Earthquake Forecasting Institute, Cheng Wanzheng, the places in China most frequently hit by earthquakes is Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang (Uygur Autonomous Region), Yunnan and Sichuan. Sichuan is located in the middle of a seismic belt between south and north China, which makes it susceptible to earthquakes. Many citizens worry whether Sichuan is going to suffer from frequent earthquakes, but experts in the provincial Earthquake Administration said that according to statistics, Sichuan in should not have another earthquake for at least another two years.
The people involved in the Earthquake Administration said that Chengdu is not located on any seismic belt or earthquake zone. Therefore, there should not be an earthquake in Chengdu City itself, but there is a possibility that earthquakes could hit in the suburbs of Chengdu, namely Longquan, and Jintang. Mountain ranges in Longquan were formed by the extrusion movement of the earth, making it susceptible to slight tremors due to annual crustal movement. Since the Longquan Mountain range is small, the movement of the plates is not obvious, and any earthquake that did hit the area would be just 3 or below on the Richter scale. These tremors are not normally even noticed, and do not cause damage to life, or property.
The earthquakes can happen at any of China's eight seismic belts or zones in Sichuan: Xianshuihe Seismic Belt, Anninghe-Zemuhe Seismic Belt, Litang Seismic Belt, Jinshajiang Seismic Belt, Longmenshan Seismic Belt, Songpan Seismic Belt, Mingshan-Mabian-Zhaotong Seismic Belt and Muli-Yanyuan Seismic Zone. It is said that the Xianshuihe Seismic Belt starts from Ganzi County to Luhuo, Daofu, Kangding, and the south of Luding County, and it is the most active seismic belt in Sichuan Province.
