Wolong Nature Reserve's Pandas are Safe

Wolong Nature Reserve in China's Sichuan Province is home to the some of the last remaining wild giant pandas in China. The giant panda is considered a living treasure, and one of China's most beloved symbols.

The epicenter of the earthquake that rocked China on Monday May 12th was located only 30 kilometers from the reserve which has caused great concern throughout the world over this endangered species. All communications to the area were knocked out for over 30 hours because of the earthquake causing a lot of speculation.Chengdu's Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding announced early Tuesday that all of its giant panda inhabitants were ok, but the fate of the Wolong giant pandas was unknown. On Tuesday evening China's State Forestry Administration (SFA) announced that communication had been restored and the 86 giant pandas raised at the Wolong Nature Reserve are safe and well.

All of the reserve's giant panda cubs have been transported to safety.

Sichuan is home to 75 percent of China's wild pandas and their condition is still unknown. The majority of them have been tagged with GPS transmitters, and experts are now tracking them to check on their safety. All of the 144 pandas raised in China's three panda research bases in Chengdu, Wolong, and Xian, all of which are in the earthquake zone, were unharmed, which is a huge relief for lovers of this beautiful, and endangered species.
